If you’ve got moles, then you’ve got company, too! The average person will develop about 10-40 moles over the course of their lifetime. These moles can vary widely in appearance, from flesh colored to black, from as small as a pen mark to as large as a pencil eraser (or larger), and from circular to misshapen or asymmetrical. These moles will vary in how concerning they are, as well. Moles that are black, large, and asymmetrical are particularly concerning, as they are more likely to contain cancer. These potentially cancerous moles should be examined by a dermatologist for risks of cancer. It’s well-known that cancer is much easier to treat when caught early, so this check-in with a dermatologist is very important when moles are particularly suspicious.
Can my child get mole removal treatment?
Most mole removal patients may be adults, but some are children, too! If children have moles, their parents may wonder if their children are candidates for mole removal. As is often the case, the answer is “it depends!” It depends on what kind of mole removal treatment they receive, the urgency of the treatment, and their ability to sit still during their procedure.
Some moles are not signs of deep-seated problems and are totally benign. This is not always the case, though. Some moles are malignant, meaning they are signs of cancer. If you suspect that your child’s mole may be cancerous, it’s important to have them examined for the child’s safety. How do you know whether a child’s moles may be cancerous, though? Great question! There are a few signs. Like we said above, if a mole is black, large, misshapen, or changing, it could be dangerous and worth having a doctor examine it. We know it’s not always convenient, but if it’s important for a child’s health, then that measure should be taken.
Another question to answer when considering if a child is a candidate for mole removal is whether or not the child can sit still through the procedure. Children are notorious for squirming, and if they can’t sit still through our procedure, there’s a risk of having the child move in such a way that the surgeon accidentally harms healthy cells and not just the mole cells. We don’t ever want this to happen, so if a child is particularly young, it might be best to wait until they are old or mature enough to sit still through the procedure.
